KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 10): Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chairman Tan Sri Dr Mohd Munir Abdul Majid has resigned as independent non-executive director of Handal Resources Bhd after less than six months, citing other additional commitments as a reason.

In a filling with Bursa Malaysia, the integrated crane services provider said Munir, 70, has also resigned as chairman of the group's risk and nomination committees.

Munir has been a member of the board since July 30 last year. His appointment as independent non-executive director came together with Tengku Baderul Zaman Sultan Mahmud and Jacqueline Fong Yean Yee, amid a boardroom revamp.

It also saw Sunildeep Singh Dhaliwal taking over the position of group managing director from Mallek Rizal Mohsin, who was redesignated executive vice-chairman, and Handal's founder and executive chairman Datuk Mohsin Abdul Halim, redesignated to group non-independent non-executive chairman.

Handal had said then that the changes were intended to strengthen the board’s composition, independence and accountability, apart from embracing diversity.

Handal shares rose one sen or 3.13% to close at 33 sen today, giving it a market capitalisation of RM52.8 million.
