KUALA LUMPUR (September 23) - Former Terengganu Investment Authority and 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) chief executive officer Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi is expected to take the witness stand at the High Court today in the trial involving accused former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He is one of the key prosecution witness in the trial besides Najib's former special aide Datuk Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin.

However, Amhari who finished testifying last Thursday may come in the morning should the prosecution have not finished his re-examination.

Last Thursday, Amhari when questioned by senior DPP Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram maintained that he was not in a position to influence Najib in all 1MDB dealings especially in its proposed rationalisation of debts as suggested by defence counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

He also described of the possible threats he had to face following his evidence in the trial as he described himself as an unwilling middleman in the whole affair as he described how he was asked by Najib to go to Abu Dhabi and China to negotiate in 2016 with Low Taek Jho's (Jho Low) talking points.

In both trips, Najib reimbursed him with thousands of ringgit which was paid at his residence after going for the trip.

With regards to Shahrol who would be the prosecution's ninth witness, he is expected to testify of Najib's close relationship with Jho Low, the formation of TIA and 1MDB, also with regards to Article 117 inserted to TIA which later became 1MDB giving Najib huge powers as the chairman of the board of advisors in 1MDB.

The trial continues today before Justice Sequerah, and will be reported by The Edge live.
