MoH detects five new Covid-19 clusters in Klang Valley and one in Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 8): Six new Covid-19 clusters — five in the Klang Valley and one in Sabah — were identified in the 24 hours as of noon.

This brought to 576, the number of clusters reported by Malaysia so far, of which 257 are currently active and are being monitored by the Ministry of Health (MoH).

Four of the clusters reported today are related to the workplace including the Jalan Klinik cluster in Klang, which posted 132 infections after 448 factory personnel underwent targeted screening.

The other workplace clusters are the Hevea construction site cluster in Petaling with 30 cases, Bukit Belimbing cluster involving Petaling and Klang with 33 cases, and the Kapital cluster in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur with 72 cases, said MoH director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

The remaining clusters are the Kauran cluster in Keningau, Sabah with 55 cases, and the Setapak Indah cluster in Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur with 16 cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said 319 clusters have been declared as ended, the latest being the Jalan Bomba cluster in Sabah, the Makmur cluster in Johor, and the Galeri construction site cluster in Kuala Lumpur.

Among clusters that reported a high number of infections today are the Sungai Putus cluster — linked to the glove manufacturer Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd — with 374 cases, and the Jalan Harapan prison cluster with 73 cases.

A record 16 deaths related to the Covid-19 pandemic were reported in Malaysia today, raising total deaths to 537.

The number of new infections in the 24 hours as of noon today was 2,643, raising the overall total to 131,108.
