GEORGE TOWN (Feb 7): More than 300 residents of the Tanjung Tokong Phase 4A resettlement project will move into their new homes provided at no cost by UDA Holdings Berhad (UDA), a property development and asset management company under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (MEDAC).

According to a statement by MEDAC, its minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaffar said the relocating process should be done immediately, so that residents can live in more comfortable and safe homes, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic period.

“The residents should move to a new home immediately, as the houses are in a dilapidated condition.

“In a recent cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin also asked for the relocation to be expedited during the MCO period to put people’s welfare as a priority, especially in these challenging times,” he said.

Wan Junaidi said the resettlement project around Tanjung Tokong led by UDA since 1972 was seen as a proud effort in helping the community, especially the Bumiputera in Tanjung Tokong, Penang where the property value is very high.

“Property prices in Penang are beyond the means of the Bumiputera community. Congratulations to UDA, because this effort allows them to acquire property in strategic areas.

“It is estimated that the market price per unit of the Pangsapuri Warisan Tanjung Phase 4A Project is worth around RM400,000,” he added.

The project, which was first developed on Oct 27, 2014, is part of UDA’s corporate social responsibility in developing the city and providing resettlement for the Bumiputera community in Tanjung Tokong.

Developed by UDA subsidiary, UDA Land (North) Sdn Bhd, on eight acres (3.24 hectares) of land at a cost of RM84 million, the project consists of 10 blocks with 550 three-bedroom apartment units, with built up areas of 800 sq ft and 850 sq ft.

Built on a strategic location in the Timur Laut district, Penang, it also features good infrastructure and facilities such as supermarkets, shopping malls, mosque and schools.

Meanwhile, UDA chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias said the company is currently in the process of handing over the new house keys to the residents of Tanjung Tokong Phase 4A.

“This initiative will help residents to live in more conducive and comfortable homes.

“Prior to this, the residents lived in a temporary settlement of longhouses provided by UDA. The area (settlement) was dense, so the government hopes this effort (new housing) can ease their burden during this challenging time,” he added.
