KUALA LUMPUR (June 29): The participation of the Malaysian delegation at the world's largest international film market, Marche Du Film, in Cannes, France last month yielded great results with overall sales value of RM158.7 million recorded, far exceeding the target of RM50 million.

Minister of Communications and Multimedia Tan Sri Annuar Musa in a statement said that the figure includes potential sales and deals that have been finalised.

"This proves that the local creative industry has its own market niche if all parties (government and private sector) work together to increase Malaysia's visibility at the global level," he said.

Marche Du Film is the film industry’s largest gathering for producers, financiers, broadcasters, distributors, suppliers and buyers from around the world to meet, share ideas and make deals.

A total of 250 companies from 110 countries participated in the nine-day event from May 17 to 25.

The Malaysian delegation consisted of agencies under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (K-KOMM), namely the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) which acted as the secretariat, the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the Department of Broadcasting, Malaysia (RTM) and the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) .

Annuar said at the film market, the government and 13 local companies including film producers, production service providers, filming facility supervisors and animation companies showcased their products and services with world-leading companies and bodies such as Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures, Netflix, BBC and Canal+ .

"To find out the best ways and approaches for Malaysian content products to gain recognition at festivals or international markets, the delegation also met international film festival and market organisers such as Marche Du Film, Busan Film Festival, Udine Film Festival, FOCUS Location Expo and American Film Market,”he said.

Apart from that, he said the organisation of the international forum "Malaysia — The Heartbeat of Asia" also paved the way for promoting Malaysia as an international filming hub by offering cash rebates of up to 35% through the Film in Malaysia Incentive (FIMI) as the main attraction.

"All these prove that the government is very supportive and fully committed in developing Malaysia's creative industry ecosystem at the international level," he said.
