KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 7): Datuk Pang Chin Hin, the founder and executive chairman of snack food maker Mamee-Double Decker Sdn Bhd, has passed away at the age of 96.

Pang died peacefully in Melaka on Saturday (Nov 5), according to several media reports.

The Mamee story began in 1971, when Pang and his partner started a small factory in Melaka to manufacture instant noodles. Production then began a year later with the release of Mamee’s first ever product, Lucky instant noodle and vermicelli.

“[In 1974], when Tan Sri Pang Tee Chew noticed rubber tappers eating uncooked instant noodles straight from the pack, the Pang father-son duo steered their noodle production in a new direction and launched the memorable crunchy noodle snack — Mamee,” Mamee said on its corporate website.

Pang then expanded further into the snack business and introduced Double Decker's crackers in 1980 and Mister Potato snacks in 1992.

In the same year, Pang changed the name of his company from Pacific Food Sdn Bhd to Mamee-Double Decker when it was listed on the local stock market. Pang and his family however took the company private in 2012.

In 2015, Mamee opened its first concept store, Mamee Jonker House, at the heart of a UNESCO heritage street after over 40 years of heritage in food and manufacturing.

Pang's son, Tee Chew, is currently the chief executive officer and managing director of the company while Datuk Seri Pang Tee Nam is the chief operating officer.

In 2019, Mamee bought into financially strapped Khee San Bhd through a share placement, which was followed by a cash call.
