Sime Darby group MD appointed as MPOB chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Plantation and Commodities has appointed Sime Darby Plantation Bhd group managing director Mohamed Helmy Othman Basha as the Malaysian Palm Oil Board's (MPOB) chairman, effective 1 February 2023.

the agency is confident that Mohamed Helmy's extensive experience in the palm oil sector will help improve the sustainable development of the country's palm oil sector.

Mohamad Helmy qualified with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), London, and commenced his career with Wellers Accountants, Oxford, United Kingdom.

Upon his return to Malaysia in 1991, he worked in the Shell Malaysia Group of Companies.

He joined the Guthrie Group in 1997, serving in several senior roles in the property and plantation businesses of the company in Malaysia and Indonesia.

He was then appointed chief executive officer of Highlands & Lowlands Bhd and Guthrie Ropel Bhd before the merger of Guthrie, Golden Hope Plantations Bhd and

Sime Darby Bhd in 2007.

After the merger, he was appointed head of upstream Malaysia for Sime Darby Plantation in 2007.

He left Sime Darby Plantation in 2013 to pursue his interests before rejoining the company in 2016, where he served in several key positions before assuming his current role in 2019.

He is currently the president of the Malayan Agricultural Producers Association (MAPA),

and chairman of the MPOB's research and development

main committee.

He is also a member of MPOB's board of

trustees, a member of the Incorporated Society of Planters, a Fellow of the ACCA

and a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.
