KUALA LUMPUR: Leadership changes in government-linked companies (GLCs) will come to an end soon, according to Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

The new government now wants personalities with the highest integrity, knowledge and credibility to lead, Mohamed Azmin told reporters yesterday.

He was speaking during the launch of the World Bank’s 18th edition of the Malaysia Economic Monitor, when asked about the recent spate of leadership shake-ups at certain public institutions and GLCs following the formation of the new Pakatan Harapan government less than two months ago, and the candidates the government is looking for to replace those who have resigned.

Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar is the latest among those who are leaving. Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), the investment arm of Yayasan Pelaburan Bumiputera, announced last week that Abdul Wahid was to retire from his role as the group’s chairman on June 30. He was replaced by former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, who assumed chairmanship on July 1.

Along with Abdul Wahid, PNB director Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin, who is also PNB Research Institute Sdn Bhd chairman, retired on the same day. The series of departures started on the first working day post-14th general election, with Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad stepping down as the chairman of the Federal Land Development Authority, followed by the resignation of Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad as the chief of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah’s contract as the Treasury secretary-general was shortened to June, and then transferred to the Public Service Department. Next to go was former attorney-general Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, who was pressured to resign after he was told to go on leave.

Subsequently, Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim gave up his chairmanship of pilgrim fund Lembaga Tabung Haji, as well as of listed companies Brahim’s Holdings Bhd and Seni Jaya Corp Bhd. Not long after that, Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim relinquished his role as the central bank’s governor.

After that, Datuk Seri Mohammed Shazalli Ramly announced his resignation as the managing director and group chief executive officer of Telekom Malaysia Bhd. This was followed by the resignation of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) independent non-executive director Datuk Mohd Omar Mustapha on June 1.

Yesterday, Petronas announced that its chairman Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan completed his three-year contract on June 30, confirming a report by The Edge Financial Daily on June 6 that Mohd Sidek and Mohd Omar were on their way out of the national oil company.
