MTDC sees potential in homegrown robotics technology

KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 15): The Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) is on a search for homegrown companies and individuals who can develop robotics technology for local businesses to become Industry 4.0-ready.

“It can solve the reliance on labour to reduce cost,” said MTDC chief executive, Datuk Norhalim Yunus, at the launch of the MTDC Robotics Accelerator Programme (MTDC RAP) boot camp today.

“We want to help develop the robotics systems of companies that are still at the 2.0 stage. These are entrepreneurs who are still dependant on foreign workers. Maybe it can advance them to an Industry 3.0 level of automation.

“The technology needn’t be overly sophisticated or expensive. The most important thing is that the process of maintaining and repairing can be done here to reduce cost,” he said.

MTDC also sees the potential of robotics in education.

“We have a local company (Cytron Technologies), a beneficiary of the Commercialisation of Research and Development Fund, that is producing robots for education and has successfully marketed it worldwide,” said Norhalim.

“However, we want more local schoolchildren to have access to robotics which won’t cost them a lot of money (between RM100 and RM200), just like Raspberry Pi in the United Kingdom,” he said.

“There’s great potential because if there is local demand, it can also be marketed around the region,” he added.

The objective of the MTDC boot camp being held at the UPM-MTDC Technology Centre TIC III until Oct 17 is to train the 50 participants in teams from 17 local universities and two local private companies, on how to pitch their creation and find sponsors.

The five best teams will be accepted into the MTDC Accelerator Programme which will help fast track the development of their inventions into commercial products.

The MTDC RAP is an inaugural incubator programme aimed at supporting and nurturing tech companies.
