Jaya Tiasa scales down wood processing operations
KUCHING: Jaya Tiasa Holdings Bhd has scaled down its downstream wood processing operations due to a sharp drop in the supply of logs as raw materials.
The utilisation rates of the group’s plywood mills and veneer mills have fallen to below 40% of their installed capacities.
For financial year ended June 30, 2018 (FY18), the plywood mills were operating at 39% of installed capacity of 180,000 cu m per annum, resulting in a drop in production to 69,320 cu m, down from 82,685 cu m or utilisation rate of 46% in FY17, according to Jaya Tiasa chief executive officer Datuk Wong Sie Young.
He said the veneer mills’ output fell to 53,811 cu m from 74,560 cu m year-on-year, representing a 13% drop in their utilisation rate to 33% from 46%. The mills’ total installed capacity is 162,000 cu m per annum.
