GEORGE TOWN (April 15): The Penang Malays Association (Pemenang) has urged the Government to consider setting up a Constitutional Court in Malaysia specifically to handle cases involving the Federal Constitution.

Its president Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff today said among others are the cases that touch on issues concerning the position of the Malay rulers, the position of Islam and the rights and privileges of the Malays and Bumiputera.

“The proposal to establish the Constitutional Court is also to curb issues raised by certain quarters and some elements that could trigger fights and racial riots,” he said in a press conference here.

He explained that with the existence of an act to establish the Constitutional Court, all related actions could be implemented more quickly and could be contained by the authority.

“Upon conviction of insulting the constitution, the wrongdoer should be punished by having their citizenship suspended or banished from the district within the time frame set by the court," he said.

He also added that the proposal had been submitted in writing to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Jan 18 but the association had yet to receive any feedback.
