KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 18): Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said while he had expected the majority of voters at the Tanjung Piai by-election to shift from Pakatan Harapan (PH) to other candidates, he had only expected the ruling coalition to lose by not more than 2,000 votes.

"However, the official results show a defeat by a majority of as many as 15,806 votes.

"A detailed, serious and honest post-mortem at all levels of the party will be done to determine the true cause of the defeat in this by-election," said the premier, who is also PH chairman, in a statement today.

Barisan Nasional reclaimed the seat when MCA candidate Datuk Wee Jeck Seng won by a landslide last weekend, garnering 25,466 or 65.61% of the valid votes.

Meanwhile, PH's Karmaine Sardini secured 10,380 votes, whereas Gerakan's Wendy Subramaniam only received 1,707 votes.

Datuk Dr Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz of Berjasa took 850 votes, while independent candidates Ang Chuan Lock and Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar received 380 and 32 votes each.
