Knight Frank: Shopping centres need to ‘reinvent’ themselves

PETALING JAYA: The retail industry is expected to see more shopping centres embrace an omni-channel approach to business as competition within the sector intensifies.

Knight Frank Malaysia, in its Real Estate Highlights, report for the second half of 2019 said shopping centres need to reinvent themselves to survive the digital age.

“In the short-to-medium term, we expect to see more operators and retail players embracing technological changes, as well as interactive and experiential engagements to drive footfalls and boost sales as the country’s e-commerce market, which reportedly tripled in size since 2015, continues its strong growth momentum, ” it said.

It revealed that the 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya is the first mall in the country to adopt a retail cashless system.
