GEORGE TOWN: The worldwide shipment of smartphones is likely to contract more than 2.3% this year, says Penang-based manufacturers of semiconductor test equipment and sensors.
Globetronics Technology Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Heng Huck Lee told StarBiz that the decline was inevitable, as the worldwide shortage of raw materials was still an unresolved issue.
“In February, the IDC forecast that the worldwide smartphone market is expected to decline 2.3% in 2020, with shipment volume at just over 1.3 billion because of the Covid-19 outbreak. The situation in Europe has worsened since February, with many of the smartphone component makers in Asia, the United States and Europe delaying their orders from China.
