Bursa rises in early trade as optimism grows on Fed policy shift

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia took the opportunity of growing positive sentiment in global markets to extend its bounce higher on Friday as the second-quarter earnings season approaches its end.

At 9.05am, the key market index moved 1.83 points higher to 1,556.61. Trading activity was seen ramping up with 538.17 million shares crossed for RM180.08mil.

As Corporate Malaysia enters its final day of the second-quarter earning season, investors have been left with a stream of dismal results, resulting in falling share prices. However, losses were capped by lowered expectations for the quarter, which was projected to be weak given the Covid-19 disruption.

Financial counters are in the spotlight as they remain among the few heavyweights yet to release their results.

Maybank, which closed unchanged after announcing its results yesterday, slipped three sen in Friday trade to RM7.43.

Leading banks that are yet to see their earnings results include Public Bank, up two sen to RM16.64, Hong Leong Bank, up two sen to RM14.66, CIMB unchanged at RM3.37 and RHB up one sen to RM4.69.

As Asian market opened for business on Friday, investors were lifted on news that the US Federal Reserve had made a major policy shift to keep interest rates low and allow inflation to roam "moderately" higher than 2% for the some time.

On Wall Street overnight, the Dow Jones had risen 0.57% and the S&P 500 gained 0.17%, with both indices setting new intraday highs.

Japan's Nikkei jumped higher at the opening bell but retraced to a gain of 0.2% while South Korea's Kospi climbed 0.8%.

On Bursa Malaysia, profit-taking was seen in Nestle, down 80 sen to RM139.20, Top Glove dropping 24 sen to RM26.16 and Hartalega sliding 18 sen to RM16.68.

Leading gainers included Kossan rising 24 sden to Rm15.64, KLK gaining 18 sen to RM22.90 and Allianz jumping 54 sen to RM14.02.

Top actives were XOX down two sen to 30 sen, Vivocom up one sen to five sen and NovaMSC rising one sen to nine sen.
