KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 22): A teaching intern at St Joseph's Institution International School Malaysia (SJIIM) in Tropicana Indah, Petaling Jaya has tested positive for Covid-19.

In a letter to parents dated Oct 21 sighted by The Edge, SJIIM said that the intern, who joined the school on Oct 12 for one day prior to the school's closure on Oct 13, has been in self-quarantine from Oct 14 when she started to feel unwell.

On Oct 18, the intern was informed that she had been in close contact with a positive case and was required to take the Covid-19 test.

"The results of the test were received last night (Oct 20) and the intern tested positive," head of school Mak Lai Ying Frances said in the letter.

"The school will take advice from the relevant authorities on the actions to be taken," she added.

Mak stressed that the school has strict standard operating procedures and that they are complied with at all times.

Following the infection, she said that the school has advised staff to work from home and conduct a disinfection exercise of the school under the guidance of the relevant authorities.

"We have not been advised yet by the relevant authorities that anyone in our community needs to take further action at this time," Mak added.

After being closed for about five months since the first imposition of the Movement Control Order in March, schools nationwide were allowed to reopen, in phases, starting June 24.

On Oct 9, the Education Ministry announced that any school with positive Covid-19 cases should be closed for seven days without waiting for risk analysis from the Health Ministry.

Several schools, including those in Perak, Sabah, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur, have been ordered to close thus far following the detection of positive Covid-19 cases there.
