KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 23): Corporate Malaysia’s support for conserving the environment will be in focus this Sunday when the inaugural Hornbill Award is held online at the Climate Week New York.

Six groups are in the running to win a prize of RM105,000 for the best proposal on the theme of biodiversity conservation. The finalists were chosen from 21 entries for the competition, which is an initiative of Climate Governance Malaysia (CGM) to support non-governmental organisations.

CGM is a network of non-executive board directors who seek to play their stewardship role in business by helping to steer companies through an effective climate transition strategy. CGM is the Malaysian chapter of the World Economic Forum’s Climate Governance Initiative.

Its corporate partners in the Hornbill Award in sponsorship roles include Areca Capital, Astro, Better Malaysia Foundation, CIMB Foundation, Tenaga Nasional, Yayasan Hasanah and Yayasan Sime Darby, CGM said in a statement. The initiative is also supported by audit and consulting firm PwC, and leading content and media houses Eco-Business and IslamicMarkets.com.

The short-listed projects cover community participation, habitat management, onshore and offshore environments and extend from Peninsular Malaysia to Sabah. They include:

  • A community-based scheme to protect the Helmeted Hornbill in Tawau, Sabah (1StopBorneo Wildlife)
  • An effort to bring back rare animals, including the elephant, in Sabah, with plans to expand to peninsular Malaysia (Borneo Rhino Alliance)
  • Community-led habitat management of the Pendas and Pulai estuaries in Gelang Patah, Johor (Kelab Alami Tanjung Kupang)
  • Conservation of marine megafauna, located in Sabah (Marine Research Foundation)
  • Mapping the marine ecosystem corridors on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia (Reef Check Malaysia) and
  • A biodiversity and educational site in Cameron Highlands, Pahang (Regional Environmental Awareness of Cameron Highlands)

At the Climate Week New York, pegged as the largest climate event of the year, the winner will be chosen based on the quality of the proposal, an audience poll, and on a video made by each participating group.

The contest is aligned to a target in the National Biodiversity Policy for funds to be mobilised for the conservation of biodiversity from both government and non-government sources, the statement said.

The Hornbill Award offers businesses a chance to support sustainability and climate resilience, it said.

It also contributes towards Malaysia’s commitment, under the Paris Agreement, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 in relation to its 2005 emissions intensity of GDP.

In addition, it helps to maintain the national target of having at least 50% of forest and tree cover.

“The six finalist NGOs will have access to a global platform to showcase their work, giving them an opportunity to promote their good work and attract funders for projects in climate action and biodiversity conservation,” the statement said.
