KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 22): Don't be too legalistic and calculating in assisting people affected  by floods, said Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

“Whatever their concerns, it is the responsibility of the government through the Ministries to go down to the affected areas, see the situation for itself and find solutions.

"We've come here today for humanitarian reasons in helping the people and this effort will continue until the area returns to normalcy as we understand that it is not easy for them (flood victims) to clean their homes by themselves."

Reezal Merican said this after viewing the cleaning-up work in Kampung Sungai Serai, Hulu Langat, near here, on Wednesday via the Ministry’s agency, Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), which was also participated by volunteers from PR1MA Corporation Malaysia.

The initiative involved the participation of cleansing concessionaires under SWCorp from the other zones including Alam Flora (Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur) and E-Idaman (northen zone).

"The Ministry’s commitment in Selangor will continue but we will also be looking at other areas that require our presence through SWCorp and the other subsidiary companies,” said Reezal Merican.

He added that the Ministry had allocated RM60 million for the post-flood operations and repairs to the public facilities in 25 local government areas.
