KUALA LUMPUR: Supermax Corp Bhd has rolled out a comprehensive foreign worker management policy and enhanced existing human resources policies, which is expected to speed up the process in meeting International Labour Organization (ILO) standards.

These policies have been effective since November 2021, it said.

Supermax said it is in the process of updating the US Customs Border and Protection of improvements made under its new policies.

"The effectiveness and implementation of these policies will be inspected by different levels of on-going audits with at least two auditing processes, and two additional US-based auditors which will conduct analysis and monitoring against the ILO 11 Forced Labour Indicators," it said in a statement.

Among other refinements, the group said it is strengthening its human resources team and building internal capacity among the supervisory and management levels on the prevention of forced labour and education on workers' rights.

It said it is also moderning its human resources tools and systems to enable real-time data management as well as employee self service that will promote greater transparency and understanding of entitlements and wages at workers' level.

To improve working and living conditions, the group is refurbishing its hostel facilities to provide workers with adequate privacy and improved leisure and lifestyle faclities to the dormitory.

The refurbishment and renovation work are ongoing and is expected to be completed by mid-February 2022.

With regards to wages, Supermax will adopt an equal pay and benefit structure so both local and foreign workers will be on equal footing on both pay and benefits.

Since December 2021, Supermax has raised its minimum wage to RM1,400, above the RM1,200 requirement by Malaysian employment regulations.

The group will also address the use of sub-contractors in January 2022 and shall ensure the rights and welfare of the workers employment by these sub-contractors are protected.

A whistle blowing channel will be put in place, to be administered by a reputable independent third party that reports directly to the Supermax board of directors.

"The Board assures that the Company is committed to employees’ wellbeing and respecting of their rights at all times.

"Supermax views compliance as a serious matter, and is cooperating with authorities and relevant bodies to ensure that the new policies implemented meets with the ILO standards," it said.
