Dato' Nizam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Oxon) Degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University, United Kingdom in 1980.

After graduation, Dato' Nizam joined Bumiputra Merchant Bankers Bhd. focusing on advisory work related to mergers and acquisition, floatation, equity financing and corporate restructuring.

Dato' Nizam then spent 7 years as an institutional dealing director in a stockbroking firm handling major institutional clients both local and foreign, and the last 7 years in stockbroking firm as chief executive officer with responsibilities over both front and back room operations in securities and futures businesses. Dato' Nizam served on various committees of the Malaysian Stock Exchange Bhd. and was on the pro-tem committee which was instrumental in the creation of Malaysian Exchange of Securities Dealing and Automated Quotation (MESDAQ).

Dato' Nizam also served as either chairman, director or member of the audit committee of several major private and public listed companies in Malaysia, such as Deutsche Bank Malaysia Berhad, Delloyd Ventures Berhad, Mamee-Double Decker (M) Berhad, Yeo Hiap Seng (M) Berhad and Wah Seong group of companies.

Dato' Nizam was appointed as a pro chancellor of Universiti Tun Abdul Razak at the university's 12th convocation ceremony on 3 November 2012. He also serves as trustees on several charitable foundations namely, Noah Foundation, Yayasan Rahah, Hong Leong Foundation, the National Children Welfare Foundation, Yayasan Wah Seong and Yayasan Cemerlang.
