Dato Tan is a Civil Engineer by profession. He joined Sunway Group in 1981 to spearhead the formation of the construction arm within Sunway Group from scratch with a paid-up capital of RM1 million. He remains an employee of Sunway Group for over 40 years.

He was the Senior Managing Director of Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd and was appointed as Head of Property and Construction Division on 1 January 2013 after the merger of Sunway Holdings Berhad and Sunway City Behad in August 2011. His key role was to synergise and enhance the full potential values in the Group's core property and construction collaborations. He is currently the Senior Managing Director in Chairman's Office to support the Chairman of Sunway Group in areas of new business ventures, strategic partnerships and collaborations.

He is currently the Honorary Advisor of Master Builders Association Malaysia. He is also a member of the Board and Executive Committee of Malaysian South-South Corporation Berhad. He is also currently an alternate director of the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT).

He was appointed as a Director of Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) from 2007 to 2009. In 2006, he was awarded the Chief Executive Officer of the Year by the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Award (MCIEA). He was also a Board member of Malaysian Property Incorporated (MPI), a government company incorporated previously to promote Malaysian properties abroad.
