| Working experience and occupation | He was directly recruited from London to join Bumiputra Merchant Bankers Berhad (BMB) in 1981 as corporate finance officer. BMB is a subsidiary of Bank Bumiputra Malaysia Berhad. He was actively involved in numerous sophisticated corporate transactions of substantial values and was promoted to Head of Corporate Finance in 1987. Following several fast-track promotions, he was appointed as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of BMB in July 1992. He was the first person who rose from the ranks to be appointed to this position. Furthermore, he became the first non-Bumiputra Malaysian to hold this position. He resigned from BMB in September 1997 and also set a record for the longest serving Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of BMB. This record remains intact. Mr. Yap is now a specialist financial adviser and company director. Mr. Yap provides advisory services through Margin Capital Sdn Bhd which is a wholly-owned by Mr. Yap and his family. The list of his directorships in all public companies in Malaysia is attached. In addition, he has served as confidential financial adviser to numerous public listed companies. During his sixteen (16) years distinguished career with BMB, Mr. Yap had advised on many significant transactions. In the financial services sector, he had advised on the acquisitions of EON Bank Berhad, Hong Leong Bank Berhad and Sime Bank Berhad (formerly known as United Malayan Banking Corporation Berhad (UMBC). In respect of the UMBC acquisition, Mr. Yap advised Datuk Keramat Holdings Berhad to acquire 60% equity in UMBC in 1992/93 for RM600 million. Following a successful turnaround of UMBC, the 60% equity interest was sold to Sime Darby Berhad in 1996 for RM1,300 million in cash. At BMB, Mr. Yap has successfully raised many multi-million Ringgit financial facilities for clients in all the industries. |
