Project RELeaf sets a new benchmark for corporate reforestation and community empowerment

Malaysia remains one of the world’s most forested nations, with 54% of its land still covered in lush greenery, surpassing its pledge to conserve at least half of its landmass as forests. Yet, climate change and environmental pressures demand more than preservation; they call for bold restoration efforts to revive degraded landscapes and strengthen natural carbon sinks.

Nestlé’s Record-Breaking Contribution

Against this backdrop, Nestlé Malaysia’s Project RELeaf stands as a flagship initiative in the country’s sustainability journey. Launched in 2020, the program has achieved its ambitious target of planting 3 million trees, and when combined with its predecessor, Project RiLeaf, Nestlé has restored an unprecedented 4 million trees nationwide - the largest private-sector reforestation effort ever recorded in Malaysia. This milestone was made possible through strong collaboration with the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia, the Sabah Wildlife Department, the Malaysian Nature Society, and plantation partners SD Guthrie, TDM Plantation, IOI Plantation, Sabah Softwoods, Sawit Kinabalu, and Ikhasas.

Looking ahead, Nestlé is not slowing down. The next phase, Project RELeaf2030 aims to plant an additional 3 million trees over the next five years, reinforcing its commitment to Malaysia’s climate resilience and net-zero aspirations.

A Vision Beyond Trees

“Project RELeaf is a cornerstone of our ESG journey and part of Nestlé’s global Forest Positive strategy,” said Juan Aranols, Chief Executive Officer of Nestlé Malaysia. “Restoring forest landscapes is essential not only for protecting biodiversity but also for building climate resilience for the future. As we move into the next phase, we aim to strengthen partnerships, broaden community engagement, and continue contributing meaningfully to Malaysia’s sustainability goals.”

This initiative goes far beyond planting trees. By focusing on degraded riparian zones and wildlife corridors, Project RELeaf revives ecosystems and creates safe habitats for endangered species such as orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and the Malayan tiger. Increased forest cover also delivers climate benefits as Malaysia’s forest biomass plays a critical role in carbon sequestration, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Empowering Communities, Creating Impact

Equally transformative is Project RELeaf’s focus on community empowerment. Over 90 local communities have participated in indigenous seedling production, while 120 communities have engaged directly in planting activities. These efforts generate supplemental income and foster environmental stewardship, turning local communities into active guardians of Malaysia’s forests.

One of the dedicated seedling cultivators for Project RELeaf, En. Hasidin Bin Ahmit, Ketua Komuniti Anak Pokok Kinabatangan (KAPOK), Kg. Perpaduan, shared, “Being part of Project RELeaf has transformed our community’s future. Over the years, the training and support we’ve received have not only taught us how to cultivate and care for indigenous seedlings but have also provided a sustainable source of income, improved our livelihoods and given us a sense of security. What matters most is knowing that the work we do today will restore our forests and protect the wildlife that defines our home, ensuring that generations to come can thrive. And we look forward to continuing this journey together to create an even greater impact.”

Next Frontier: Agroforestry and Regenerative Agriculture

As Project RELeaf enters its next phase, Nestlé is deepening its commitment to ecosystem restoration and sustainable agriculture. The initiative will continue to focus on restoring riparian zones, creating wildlife corridors, and rebuilding forest cover to protect biodiversity and water resources. Moving forward, Nestlé plans to champion agroforestry as part of regenerative agriculture by encouraging smallholders and plantations to integrate native forest species and fruit trees into cocoa and coffee farms. This approach aims to enhance biodiversity, provide natural shade for crops, and create additional income streams for farmers demonstrating how corporate ESG initiatives can deliver measurable benefits across environmental, social, and economic dimensions.

A Force for Nature and People

Through Project RELeaf, Nestlé Malaysia demonstrates that businesses can be a powerful force for nature, climate resilience, and social empowerment. It is a tangible example of how sustained corporate action can shape a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.
