Johor state assembly dissolved for fresh election
JOHOR BAHRU (June 1): The Johor State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on Monday, paving the way for a fresh state election.
The dissolution was announced by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi at a special press conference at his official residence in Saujana here on Monday afternoon.
Onn Hafiz said the decision followed the consent of the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, during an audience earlier on Monday.
Onn Hafiz said the dissolution was carried out in accordance with Article 23 of Part II of the Laws of the Constitution of Johor 1895.
“The dissolution is intended to pave the way for the democratic process through the Johor state election, subject to the Election Commission’s announcement.
“The decision was made to ensure that the people of Johor continue to be served by a stable and strong government, insya-Allah,” he said.
He also called on all political parties, leaders and supporters to conduct themselves with decorum, maturity and respect throughout the electoral process to preserve harmony and unity among the people of Johor.
In the 2022 Johor election, Barisan Nasional won 40 of the 56 seats contested, securing a two-thirds majority in the state assembly. Pakatan Harapan won 12 seats, while Perikatan Nasional and Muda secured three and one seat, respectively.
