KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 15): The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) has shown early positive developments with a drop in infections in Categories 3 to 5 in six states, said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin said data from the Ministry of Health (MoH) showed that more than 40% of the adult population aged 18 and above in these states and federal territories — Labuan, Sarawak, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya — have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

"Yesterday, no new Covid-19 cases were reported in Labuan for the first time.

"Data on hospitals issued by the Crisis Preparedness Response Centre shows that the situation at emergency departments in the Klang Valley has also improved," he said in a statement today.

He said that on average, the number of patients waiting at the emergency department for admission to wards of MoH hospitals in Klang Valley states has also dropped.

On July 31, the average number of patients waiting at the emergency department was 909 but it dropped to 239 on Aug 13, due to the government's thorough planning and MoH's proper implementation of strategy as well as the impact of vaccination.

Covid-19 is a five-category disease, with Category 1 being the mildest.

Muhyiddin said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said on Friday that the implementation of Operation Surge Capacity in the Klang Valley on July 26 had led to a drop in hospital admission rates for Covid-19 patients of all age groups.

The prime minister said the government, through the Greater Klang Valley Special Task Force and Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force — was doing its best to ease the situation in the Klang Valley.

He hoped that this downward trend would be sustained to reduce the burden posed by serious Covid-19 cases and admissions to the intensive care units, which require more difficult treatment and a longer stay in hospital compared to admissions to normal wards.

"As such, (all should) quickly register for vaccination, including pregnant women and teenagers in the age group approved by the (Special) Committee on Ensuring Access to Vaccine Supply.

"Employers should also play their role to ensure that their employees including foreign workers are vaccinated," he added.

PICK was launched on Feb 24 to curb the Covid-19 pandemic, which hit the country early last year.

Meanwhile, in a post on his official Facebook page, Muhyiddin said efforts to ramp up vaccination are also focused on states which are seeing a spike in cases.

In Johor, the government supplied two million doses of Covid-19 vaccine recently while in Sabah 1.5 million doses were due this month.

So far, 44.1% of the adult population in the country has been fully vaccinated and 72.1% has received the first dose.

"All these achievements would not have been possible without careful planning and the implementation of a solid strategy by the government, as well as excellent cooperation and support from the rakyat.

"I have said it before and I want to say it again. Malaysians, you are great people who are so strong and patient in facing this pandemic although the fact is it is very difficult to be done," he added.

The data shared, he said, is testimony of the good progress made and shows that all the efforts of the Perikatan Nasional government are getting nearer the ultimate target of success, and by the grace of Allah the country can emerge from this pandemic through the National Recovery Plan.

Muhyiddin reiterated that the government's strategy is clear, that is as more people get fully vaccinated, more Malaysians will be protected from serious infection and the burden on the public healthcare system will be reduced.

This will directly enable more economic and social sectors to be reopened so that the country can gradually return to life under the new normal, he said.

"What is more important is that we should never give up this fight and must remember that Covid-19 is our main common enemy," he said.
